Messing Around with Mixed Media

I had originally come up with the idea for this card to add to my list of blog entries that I'd send to Christy at Tiddly Inks as part of her DT call but illness got in the way. Then I decided not to apply for the DT; but in the end I applied at the last minute - without this project.

So, I've been introduced to mixed media projects by Julie at my craft group/class. Julie is a wonderful designer and teacher, she's so very inspiring. I wanted to have a go at some of the techniques we've used but also to include digi stamps. Tiddly Inks images were the ones that came to mind when I thought about this sort of project, so here is my creation. I have to say I'm not fully happy with the finished project but it's the first time I've given this sort of work ago without guidance and overall I'm quite satisfied with it.

Tiddly Inks - Owlette and Steampunk Papers
Inkadinkado - Steampunk (gear stamp)
 Marianne Designs - Branch Garden
Embossed with Dusty Concorde Distress Embossing Powder
Silver pearls from stash
Craftwork Cards - Elegant Square Card

I would like to enter this card into the following challenge:

I created the card background by printing the alphabet from the Steampunk set onto card which I then painted with white acrylic paint. I allowed the paint to dry in a rough style to create some texture. Once the paint was dry I painted on some silver glaze with a very dry brush and then lifted some of this with kitchen towel. After this had dried I edged the background with Milled Lavender and Chipped Sapphire distress inks. The Owlette image is coloured with  Milled Lavender, Mustard Seed, Aged Mahogany and Tea Dye distress inks used as watercolours. I printed out another of the steampunk papers and used Milled Lavender distress inks to colour them, then cut out the Branch Garden flourishes from it. I then used ultra thick embossing powder and Dusty Concord over the top of them. Finally I stamped the gear image and embossed this with the Dusty Concord again, rubbing the image to release the distress crystals. As a finishing touch I added the three pearls.

Detail of cog stamp

I'm afraid that my photos at the moment aren't that great quality colour wise due to having to use electric lighting now it's getting dark so early. I'll probably try to invest in a daylight lamp at some point. Making the card was a lot of fun and I plan to carry on experimenting with this sort of project. Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog, I hope you're having a good day.
